What is electrical testing and tagging?

Electrical safety test and tagging is the process by which electrical equipment is inspected and tested for safety according to intervals set out in the AS/NZS3760 Standard. For construction and demolition sites, we work according to the AS/NZS3012:2010.  At Professional Test and Tag, we use portable appliance testers to inspect and test your equipment. We only use the latest equipment and we ensure our testers are maintained in order to achieve the most accurate results. We calibrate our tools every year, unlike our competitors.

After testing, tags will be attached to each appliance that assigns the equipment as either a pass or a fail. If the appliance has passed, the next recommended service date will be specified. All items tested by our team will be accompanied by a corresponding report. This report will contain specific results for each of the tests we undertake on any one appliance.  If you would like to be notified when your next electrical testing appointment is due, simply take advantage of our free reminder service.

Why is electrical test and tag important?

Every business has an obligation to provide a safe workplace as far as reasonably practicable, and one area of concern is electrical safety. Under the new Fire and Emergency New Zealand Fire Safety Evacuation Procedures and Evacuation Schemes Regulations 2018, it is now mandatory.

Electrical testing of equipment is essential to ensure the health and safety of your employees and that of others who visit your workplace. Being aware of these hazards allows you to take action and ensure that no one person is at risk while using the equipment.

Electrical equipment can get less reliable with age – just like everything else. Even though a device may have been safe a year ago, doesn’t mean it remains safe for use today. It’s important to make sure your equipment undergoes tagging and regular maintenance that will identify hazards as they arise. This way, one of our expert team members always follows safety regulations, always performs safety testing and can detect an issue before a tragedy occurs.

What type of appliances need electrical safety testing?

Any equipment that is connected to the electrical supply by a flexible cord and/or connecting device. It may include pieces of equipment that are or have been:

  • Being used for the first time
  • Already being used
  • Has recently been serviced or repaired
  • Returning to service from a second-hand sale
  • Available for hire

It also applies to certain forms of residual current devices (RCDs). The equipment we test can vary greatly from business to business. If you’re unsure which items you’d like tested, contact us for a chat today. We’ve worked with a large number of unique companies so we can offer some insight into your specific safety needs.

When does the equipment need electrical safety testing?

Frequency varies according to the type of environment and/or equipment. Electrical test tags should be applied at the following intervals:

*please note, these intervals dictate the maximum time frame for testing in each environment. Depending on your equipment/workplace, further tests will need to be conducted more frequently. For more information, contact us today or refer to the AS/NZS 3760 standard.

  • Demolition and construction environments (as per AS/NZS 3012): every 3 months
  • Factories, workshops, places of manufacture, assembly, maintenance or fabrication: every 6 months
  • Environment where the equipment or supply flexible cord is subject to flexing in normal use OR is open to abuse OR is in a hostile environment: every 12 months
  • Environment where the equipment or supply cord is NOT subject to flexing in normal use and is NOT open to abuse and is NOT in a hostile environment: every 5 years
  • Residential type areas: hotels, residential institutions, motels, boarding houses, halls, hostels accommodation houses etc.: every 2 years
  • Equipment used for commercial cleaning: every 6 months
  • Hire equipment: Inspection: prior to hire
  • Hire equipment: Test and tag: every 3 months
  • Repaired, serviced and second-hand equipment: After repair or service or on reintroduction to service

EARTH LOOP IMPEDANCE TEST

Do you work with electrical equipment and/or live wiring? You are obligated to provide a safe working environment for yourself and those around you. With an earth loop impedance testfrom Professional test and tag, you can avoid electrical hazards and ensure your worksite is compliant. All work sites need to comply with New Zealand standards for wiring and installation. Our technicians are up-to-date with all the latest rules and regulations so that you can rest assured that your business is safe.

What is an earth loop impedance test?

This test is a process of having the electrical earth of all your electrical installations and power points tested to discover any faults within your electric circuit. Having a functional earth return circuit will allow the detection of circuit faults and facilitate a reaction from your MCB (miniature circuit breaker). A Test & Tag technician will detect the resistance level in your earth return circuit and notify you if it is at the wrong level – it needs to be low enough to allow the circuit breaker to function correctly. Ask one of our team members to visit your business. Here, the Test & Tag team member will use an a tester to take a reading from your general-purpose outlet. All results will be documented in a detailed report that is supplied to each client. Within this report, your equipment will be assigned either a pass or a fail. This document will be kept on file should you need to access it in the future for compliance verification. Our will conduct all tests and inspections according to the current New Zealand safety standards. Loop impedance test requirements are currently informed by the AS/NZS 3000:2000 standard for Wiring Rules. Testing is mandatory for the safety of all employees. Get tested today to make sure your workplace is safe – we’re here to help with all your compliance requirements.

Why is an earth fault loop impedance test important?

Because of the severity of coming into contact with an electrical fault, having your electrical installations and power points tested for earth fault loop impedance is crucial. Your systems are valuable and circuitry needs to be maintained for the longevity and functionality of your business.
According to the current national safety standards, you are required to conduct this test on your premises to ensure the safety of all guests and employees. When you ask a Professional Test & Tag team member to inspect and test your electrical wiring, you are protecting both your employees and your liability. It is important to adhere to national legislation to avoid harsh penalties.

What is portable appliance testing?

Portable appliance testing is the process by which portable appliances are inspected and tested for safe use. These tests are conducted according to the AS/NZS 3760 or the AS/NZS 3012 for workplaces where electrical installations are in progress, as well as construction and demolition sites. The testing is completed with the use of a portable appliance tester device that helps to assess the safety status of each item.

Why is it important to test portable equipment?

While some safety defects are identifiable by visual examination, others can only be found by thorough electrical testing of equipment. By ensuring your tools, appliances, and equipment are safe, you are eliminating unnecessary risk. Every year, people are injured or killed at work. You can ensure that your workplace is safe by asking a Professional Test & Tag technician to test and tag equipment and portable appliances according to the standard frequencies.
It is important to protect your employees and ensure your business is compliant with the national safety standards. Compliance with the AS/NZS 3760 and the AS/NZS 3012 will help you prevent harm at work, and ensure you have recorded evidence of your efforts to ensure a safe working environment should an accident occur.

What type of appliances needs to be tested?

You need to test all of your portable equipment including power tools and small appliances. You should always test appliances that are being used for the first time, or items that have recently been serviced or repair. The nature of your business will determine the types of appliances you need to have tested. Your equipment might include kettles, toasters, desk lamps, power drills, circular saws, hair dryers etc.

When does the equipment need to be tested?

The testing frequency for portable devices varies according to the nature of the workplace and the type of equipment. The following information is based on the test & tag frequency standards stipulated by the AS/NZS 3012.
Construction and demolition sites:
• Portable equipment should be tested every 3 months
• Hire equipment must be tested prior to hire and at least once a month (if hire equipment remains on site then it should be tested to the same standard as all other portable equipment).
• Portable RCDs should be tested every 3 months
For the testing frequency requirements in all other work environments, see our testing and tagging services page.
